Newark, New Jersey — A vehicle pursuit involving Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers ended in a multi-car crash Wednesday, according to city officials, raising renewed tensions between local leaders and federal authorities.
Mayor Ras Baraka said on social media that ICE agents attempted to stop a van in Newark when the driver fled. Agents pursued the vehicle, resulting in a crash involving multiple cars, including one carrying three children. The van’s driver was injured and transported to a hospital. The extent of the injuries remains unclear.
Baraka stated that Newark police were not involved in the federal operation and responded only after the collision occurred. He criticized ICE’s actions as reckless, noting that New Jersey law restricts vehicle pursuits unless a suspect poses an immediate threat. “Federal authorities should adhere to local laws regarding vehicle pursuits and exercise common sense,” Baraka said.
Spokespersons for the mayor’s office, Newark police, the Department of Homeland Security, and ICE did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Baraka previously faced a trespassing charge last year while protesting outside a federal immigration detention facility in Newark; that charge was later dismissed.
