Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) said Wednesday he has secured the 218 signatures required to force a House vote on releasing federal investigation files related to Jeffrey Epstein. Speaking at a community forum in northeastern Kentucky, Massie pointed to Democrat Adelita Grijalva’s victory in Arizona’s special election as the decisive addition.
“Both of the candidates on the ballot promised to sign my discharge petition,” Massie said. “And one of them won, obviously, and so now we’re going to have 218 signatures.”
House GOP leaders, including Speaker Mike Johnson, oppose Massie’s effort and back a separate Oversight Committee probe led by Rep. James Comer (R-Ky.). Massie accused leadership of threatening Republican signers but warned that any attempt to sideline the petition would require 218 votes as well. “If you participate in that vote to sideline the discharge petition, now you’re part of the coverup,” he said.
Massie, joined on the tour by Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), said the issue is overwhelmingly popular with the public. Epstein’s 2019 death was ruled a suicide, though speculation continues. Trump has previously promised to declassify the files if reelected.
