WASHINGTON, D.C. — Arizona Sens. Mark Kelly and Ruben Gallego are calling on the Trump administration to end its investigation into the state’s 2020 election, arguing the probe undermines confidence in the electoral system.

In a letter sent Thursday to Markwayne Mullin and Immigration and Customs Enforcement leadership, the lawmakers described the inquiry as an attempt to intimidate election officials and cast doubt on results that have repeatedly been upheld.

The investigation follows a grand jury subpoena issued in March related to Arizona’s 2020 audit of Maricopa County ballots. State Senate President Warren Petersen said he complied with the request and confirmed that federal authorities now have the records.

The probe is tied to broader claims by President Donald Trump that the 2020 election was affected by fraud. However, multiple reviews and court rulings have found no evidence of widespread fraud that would have changed the outcome.

Kelly and Gallego also requested that the Department of Homeland Security release documents explaining the motivation behind the investigation.

Federal agencies have not yet publicly responded, and the matter remains ongoing.
