Washington Gov. Bob Ferguson convened emergency meetings this week to prepare for the possibility that Donald Trump may deploy National Guard troops to the state without his consent—just as the president did in California over the weekend.
Trump mobilized thousands of National Guard troops and Marines to Los Angeles following immigration protests, bypassing California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s objections. It marked the first such move in over 60 years and sparked legal challenges over 10th Amendment violations.
Ferguson called the action “deeply disturbing,” warning it’s escalating tensions and “exactly what Donald Trump wants.” The governor and Attorney General Nick Brown have been anticipating this scenario since taking office in November, examining legal pathways to oppose unauthorized federal deployments.
Though Trump cited 1977 emergency powers, Brown noted the law requires a state governor’s request unless rebellion, invasion, or failure to enforce U.S. law applies—criteria he says have not been met in California.
Ferguson signed a bill in April granting himself authority to block out-of-state National Guard deployments to Washington, a move aimed at curbing support from Republican governors for Trump’s immigration crackdowns.
Nationwide “No Kings” protests are planned for Saturday, including in Seattle, as Trump prepares for a military parade in D.C.

If Ferguson does his job he won’t need help.
What is wrong with the Bob? He’s acting like Trump’s. Going to send troops in here to attack Washington citizens. What a joke! If they do come here is to back up the cops that can’t handle the crowds. If the cops can handle the crowds then Trump won’t need to send help.
These liberal cities with liberal police are afraid of the crowds. The rocks bricks balls have cocktails, frozen water bottles, etc. That gets thrown at them. I hope he does send in troops to help if the Seattle PD can’t handle it
