TALLAHASSEE, FL — Florida House Speaker Daniel Perez has halted key legislative priorities of Gov. Ron DeSantis, refusing to take up proposals on artificial intelligence regulation and vaccine mandates during a special session.

Perez said the House would focus solely on congressional redistricting, noting no bills on the other issues were formally introduced before the session began.

The decision marks another public split between DeSantis and House leadership. The governor had pushed for legislation to ease vaccine requirements for schoolchildren and impose new restrictions on AI tools, including limits on chatbot use by minors.

Perez defended the move, citing concerns about public health and the broader scope of AI regulation. He said he was “uncomfortable” with reducing vaccine protections and suggested AI oversight should be handled at the federal level.

DeSantis criticized House Republicans, accusing them of siding with powerful industry interests. Meanwhile, the state Senate had advanced both proposals during the regular session, highlighting divisions within the GOP.

The House is expected to conclude its work after addressing redistricting, leaving the fate of the governor’s proposals uncertain.
