JACKSONVILLE, FL — Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed new legislation restricting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs, while arguing that such initiatives have discriminated against white men.

Speaking at a news conference, DeSantis described DEI as “an ideological construct” that promotes a political agenda at the expense of certain groups. He specifically stated that “white males” are the primary group harmed, adding, “It’s wrong.”

The new law prohibits counties and cities from funding or promoting DEI initiatives and allows residents to sue local governments that violate the policy. Officials found in violation could face removal from office, creating enforcement mechanisms beyond previous state-level restrictions.

Supporters of DEI programs argue they are designed to address long-standing inequalities affecting minority groups. Critics, including DeSantis, contend such efforts create reverse discrimination and undermine merit-based systems. The governor also pointed to concerns about college admissions, claiming Asian Americans have faced bias under similar frameworks.

Opposition leaders, including NAACP representatives, pushed back on the governor’s remarks, arguing they do not reflect broader public sentiment and warning the law may be overly broad or unconstitutional.

The legislation builds on earlier efforts by the DeSantis administration, including restrictions on DEI spending in public universities and education policies tied to the “Stop WOKE Act.”
