NASHVILLE, TN — Sen. Marsha Blackburn is urging Tennessee lawmakers to redraw the state’s congressional map to create an all-Republican delegation, intensifying ongoing national battles over redistricting ahead of the midterm elections.

Blackburn called on the legislature to reconvene and target the Memphis-based district currently held by Democratic Rep. Steve Cohen. Republicans already hold eight of the state’s nine House seats, and her proposal would aim to flip the final Democratic district.

In a statement, Blackburn said redrawing the map would help “cement” President Donald Trump’s agenda, signaling the broader political stakes tied to control of the House.

The push follows earlier redistricting efforts in Tennessee, including a 2022 map that divided Nashville into multiple districts, contributing to Republican gains. That move led to the retirement of longtime Democratic Rep. Jim Cooper and helped Republicans secure additional seats.

The proposal comes amid a wider national effort by both parties to redraw congressional boundaries in states where they hold legislative control. Recent activity includes map changes in Texas, North Carolina, and Missouri by Republicans, while Democrats have pursued redistricting in states such as California and Virginia.

Any new map in Tennessee would likely face legal scrutiny, as courts continue to weigh challenges related to partisan and racial gerrymandering.
