Former President Donald Trump, in a post on Truth Social, pledged to replace the Affordable Care Act (ACA), commonly known as Obamacare, with a “much better, and less expensive” healthcare program. This vow comes as Trump positions himself as the front-runner for the GOP presidential nomination next year. He criticized Obamacare as “too expensive” and “not good healthcare,” promising a more satisfactory alternative that would make people “happy, not sad.”
This renewed attack on Obamacare marks a shift, as the ACA now enjoys substantial support nationwide, with 60 percent of Americans viewing it favorably. Despite previous attempts by Republicans to repeal and replace the ACA, these efforts have largely ceased due to multiple legislative and legal failures. The GOP’s focus has shifted more towards the economy and crime.
Trump’s recent comments, echoing his criticism last month, caught many GOP lawmakers by surprise, leading to his clarification that he intends to replace, not terminate, Obamacare. He emphasized prioritizing better healthcare for Americans, claiming the current system is among the “WORST” worldwide.
However, Republican senators, including John Cornyn of Texas and Bill Cassidy, the ranking Republican on the Senate Health Committee, expressed skepticism about the feasibility of finding a viable alternative. Cassidy noted the unlikelihood of such a change in a narrowly divided Congress.
