During a campaign stop in Waukee, Iowa, a voter confronted Republican presidential candidate Ron DeSantis, questioning why he hasn’t “gone after” former President Trump, given DeSantis’s lagging poll numbers. The Florida governor was asked by the audience member, “Why haven’t you gone directly after him [Trump]? Your polls are down. He’s up really–”.

DeSantis responded by seeking clarification on what the voter meant by “going directly after.” The voter expressed his view that DeSantis has been relatively lenient towards Trump. DeSantis countered, saying he consistently highlights differences with Trump on the campaign trail and doesn’t engage in personal smears, which he believes the media desires.

The voter, not satisfied with this explanation, cited Trump’s past derogatory comments about Carly Fiorina to illustrate Trump’s lack of class. In the GOP primary race, DeSantis is struggling against Trump, who leads comfortably in the polls. Former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley is threatening DeSantis’s second-place position. Current national GOP primary polls show Trump with 64.1%, Haley with 11.3%, and DeSantis closely behind at 11%.

In general election polling, Trump and President Biden are nearly tied, with Trump slightly ahead in some surveys.
