President Donald Trump expressed full support for NATO and its core principle of collective defense during Wednesday’s summit at The Hague. When asked about the U.S. commitment to Article 5 — which treats an attack on one member as an attack on all — Trump said, “We are with them all the way.”
Trump’s remarks come amid longstanding concerns over his past criticism of NATO countries for underfunding defense. At the summit, NATO leaders are expected to announce a pledge for all members to raise defense spending to 5% of GDP by 2035 — a move Trump has advocated for since his first term.
“I’ve been asking them to go up to 5% for a number of years,” Trump said. “I think that’s going to be very big news.”
NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte credited Trump for the shift, saying the U.S. had “carried too much of the burden” for too long. “Dear Donald, you made this change possible,” Rutte added.
The commitment signals growing unity within NATO amid heightened global tensions.
