WASHINGTON, D.C. — Former Vice President Mike Pence said Sunday that President Donald Trump’s second administration has moved away from the traditional conservative principles that have defined the Republican Party for decades.

Speaking on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Pence argued that the administration has departed from core GOP values such as limited government, free-market economics, American leadership abroad, and opposition to abortion. While acknowledging Trump’s continued popularity among Republican voters, Pence said many supporters still embrace the party’s historical platform.

“I don’t think there’s any question about the president’s popularity,” Pence said. “I give him all the credit in the world for the hold that he has on Republican voters.”

Pence maintained that most Republican voters support lower taxes, fewer regulations, and a strong U.S. role in world affairs. He also criticized broad-based tariffs, government intervention in business, and what he described as the administration’s failure to take additional action against abortion pills.

The former vice president also warned that Republican success in the upcoming midterm elections could depend more on voter opposition to Democratic policies than support for the GOP’s current direction. He argued that Democrats remain vulnerable due to positions many voters view as too progressive.

Pence was especially critical of the Justice Department’s proposed “anti-weaponization fund,” which could compensate individuals who believe they were unfairly targeted by the federal government. He called the proposal a “bad idea” and said any possibility of compensation for people involved in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot would be “deeply offensive.”

The comments underscore continuing divisions within the Republican Party over Trump’s influence and the future direction of conservatism.
