Donald Trump announced a ceasefire between Israel and Iran that began at midnight ET, following a 12-day war that saw extensive U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities. Trump hailed the ceasefire as “a great thing for Israel and the world.”
Despite early violations, including missile exchanges before and after the ceasefire began, both countries confirmed the agreement. Israel’s Defense Minister ordered new strikes in response to what he called Iran’s breach of the truce. Iran denied firing any missiles, accusing Israel of continuing strikes 90 minutes into the ceasefire window.
The conflict began June 13 with Israel’s surprise attack and escalated when U.S. bombers joined in, reportedly destroying key Iranian nuclear sites. Iran retaliated with missile strikes, including one on a U.S. base in Qatar that caused no injuries.
The truce was negotiated through Qatari mediation, with involvement from U.S. officials including Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Global markets rallied and oil prices fell amid optimism the war had ended.
