Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Saturday rejected President Donald Trump’s suggestion that Ukraine give up territory as part of a peace deal with Russia. His comments came hours after Trump announced an Aug. 15 meeting in Alaska with Russian President Vladimir Putin — without Ukrainian representatives present — to discuss ending the war.

“Ukrainians will not give their land to the occupier,” Zelensky said in a video address, warning that any decisions made without Ukraine are “dead decisions” that “will never work.” He also cited Ukraine’s Constitution, which prohibits ceding territory.

Trump said Friday that a potential peace deal could involve “some swapping of territories to the betterment of both,” adding, “We’re going to get some back, and we’re going to get some switched.” The meeting will be the first between U.S. and Russian leaders since 2021.

Trump set Friday as the deadline for Putin to agree to a ceasefire or face severe tariffs and sanctions targeting Russia’s oil trade and finances. The Kremlin confirmed the summit, saying it will focus on a long-term peaceful resolution to the conflict.
