Washington, DC — White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles publicly criticized Vice President JD Vance in a candid interview published Tuesday, describing him as a “conspiracy theorist for a decade” while discussing internal tensions over the long-promised release of files tied to Jeffrey Epstein.
Wiles made the remarks in an interview with Vanity Fair, where she reflected on how senior officials underestimated the importance of the Epstein files to President Trump’s political base. According to Wiles, Vance’s long-standing interest in conspiracy-driven narratives shaped his expectations about what the files would reveal, expectations she said ultimately proved unfounded.
“The vice president, who’s been a conspiracy theorist for a decade,” Wiles said, contrasting his outlook with officials such as Kash Patel and FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino, who she said had immersed themselves in online communities convinced the files would expose sweeping wrongdoing. Wiles suggested that these assumptions fueled unrealistic expectations among Trump supporters.
The interview also revealed internal criticism of Attorney General Pam Bondi, whom Wiles said “whiffed” on understanding the political sensitivity of the issue. Wiles described Bondi’s initial release of documents as “binders full of nothingness” and rejected earlier claims that a so-called client list existed.
The comments come after Trump signed the Epstein Files Transparency Act in November, legislation requiring the Justice Department to release most remaining Epstein-related records within 30 days. While the law passed with bipartisan support, its rollout has exposed fractures inside the administration between officials focused on managing expectations and those aligned with more conspiratorial demands from the base.
