Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer (D) called former President Trump “just deranged” after he claimed women wouldn’t be thinking about abortion if he were elected in 2024. Speaking on CNN’s State of the Union with Jake Tapper, Whitmer dismissed Trump’s comments as “ludicrous” and suggested he doesn’t understand the issues women face. “He’s not lived a normal life,” Whitmer said, contrasting Trump with Vice President Kamala Harris, who she noted has experience in hourly jobs and understands the importance of women’s access to health care.
Whitmer’s remarks followed Trump’s rally speech, where he suggested that women would be “happy, healthy, confident, and free” because the abortion issue would return to state control. Trump made similar comments on Truth Social, stating women would no longer be thinking about abortion under his presidency.
In response to the criticisms, Trump spokesperson Steven Cheung accused Democrats, including Vice President Harris, of using “hateful rhetoric” and blamed them for inciting violence against Trump. Cheung demanded an apology from Democrats for their remarks.
