Washington, D.C. — A shooting near the White House on Saturday intensified concerns over rising political violence in the United States following multiple recent incidents involving President Donald Trump, government officials, and politically charged extremist attacks.

According to federal officials, Secret Service agents fatally shot a 21-year-old man after he allegedly opened fire at a White House security checkpoint, injuring a bystander. Authorities have not publicly identified a motive, though court records indicate the suspect had previously been known to law enforcement for attempting to approach the White House complex.

The incident follows several recent violent episodes tied to Trump and national politics. Last month, authorities said a man opened fire near the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner attended by Trump administration officials and journalists. Earlier this month, another armed suspect allegedly fired at officers near Vice President JD Vance’s motorcade route in Washington.

Separately, California authorities continue investigating a violent attack involving a Navy veteran accused of assaulting a man known locally for operating a heavily pro-Trump residence in Escondido. Family acquaintances described the suspect as struggling with severe PTSD and mental health problems after military service. Police said they do not currently believe the attack was politically motivated.

Lawmakers from both parties condemned the recent violence, warning that escalating political extremism and threats against public figures continue to grow nationwide.
