WASHINGTON, D.C. — The White House marked the fifth anniversary of the Jan. 6, 2021 Capitol attack by launching an official webpage that disputes the characterization of the event as an “insurrection,” framing it instead as a political fabrication by Democrats and the media.

The webpage, published Tuesday, asserts that President Donald Trump’s supporters were largely peaceful and claims Democrats “staged the real insurrection” by certifying what it calls a fraudulent 2020 election. Election officials across the country have repeatedly said there is no evidence of widespread voter fraud. The site also accuses U.S. Capitol Police of deliberately escalating tensions and alleges that officers turned a peaceful protest into chaos.

The White House page further claims that Ashli Babbitt, a Trump supporter fatally shot while attempting to breach the Speaker’s Lobby, was “murdered in cold blood.” The Justice Department closed its investigation into the officer involved in 2021, and an internal Capitol Police review determined the shooting was lawful. The page does not mention Officer Brian Sicknick, who was assaulted during the riot and died the following day after suffering strokes, according to Capitol Police.

Former Vice President Mike Pence is also singled out on the webpage, accused of “cowardice and sabotage” for refusing to block certification of the 2020 election. Pence later said law enforcement officers were the “true heroes” of that day and emphasized that Congress ultimately completed its constitutional duty.

The release coincided with renewed debate on Capitol Hill, where Democratic lawmakers held a hearing featuring testimony from former officers and prosecutors criticizing Trump’s pardons of Jan. 6 defendants and warning against efforts to revise the historical record.
