The White House on Tuesday reiterated its stance that President Donald Trump did not write or sign a sexually suggestive note included in Jeffrey Epstein’s 2003 “birthday book.” The collection, assembled by Epstein associate Ghislaine Maxwell, features letters, pictures, and cartoons from friends and acquaintances, including an alleged entry from Trump ending with, “Happy birthday — and may every day be another wonderful secret.”

Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said the signature in the book does not belong to the president. “We have maintained that position all along,” she told reporters, adding the White House would welcome handwriting analysis. Republicans echoed the denial. Rep. James Comer, R-Ky., said, “The president says it’s not [his]. I take the president at his word.”

Some Republicans dismissed the note as a Democratic fabrication. “Clearly the birthday note from President Trump is a fallacy … a leftist talking point,” said Rep. Derrick Van Orden, R-Wis.

Democrats, however, pointed to the alleged Trump entries, including another with a novelty check photo, as grounds for greater transparency. “If Republicans don’t want to engage in a cover-up … they should go sign this discharge petition,” said Rep. Ted Lieu, D-Calif.

Trump has sued the Wall Street Journal for $10 billion over earlier reporting on the birthday book.
