WASHINGTON, DC — Rep. Eugene Vindman of Virginia is urging President Donald Trump to release the transcript of what he described as a “shocking” phone call with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman following the 2018 killing of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi. Vindman, who served on the National Security Council during Trump’s first term, said the call was one of the two most troubling conversations he reviewed between Trump and foreign leaders.

In an interview on CNN, Vindman said the conversation took place shortly after Khashoggi’s death and centered on the murder of a “Virginia resident and Washington Post reporter.” He previously helped reveal details of Trump’s 2019 call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, which led to the president’s first impeachment.

Vindman’s remarks came one day after Trump hosted the crown prince at the White House and defended him when asked about Khashoggi’s killing, saying “things happen” and that the Saudi leader “knew nothing about it.” U.S. intelligence agencies have concluded the crown prince likely approved the operation.

Vindman said he felt compelled to call for the transcript after hearing Trump’s recent comments, arguing the American public and Khashoggi’s family “deserve to know” what was said. The White House dismissed Vindman’s claims, calling him a “bitter back-bencher” in a statement to The Hill.
