Vermont Gov. Phil Scott (R) has refused a federal request to deploy his state’s National Guard to Washington, D.C., rejecting President Donald Trump’s push to use troops in his crime crackdown.

According to Vermont Public, the Pentagon asked Scott to send “a few dozen” soldiers, but his chief of staff said the governor “does not support utilizing the guard for this purpose” and does not view domestic law enforcement as a proper mission.

Trump last week signed an executive order taking control of Washington’s police department and activated hundreds of National Guard members. Additional deployments from West Virginia, South Carolina, and Ohio have brought the total number of Guard troops in the capital to about 1,500.

West Virginia Gov. Patrick Morrisey (R) said his state was “proud to stand with President Trump,” but critics, including the National Alliance to End Homelessness, have called the policy “cruel” and ineffective at addressing root problems.
