Republican vice presidential nominee, Sen. JD Vance, claimed on Wednesday that Haitian migrants with legal immigration status in the U.S. are “illegal aliens” unlawfully protected from deportation, implying a change in policy if Donald Trump wins the election. Vance criticized Vice President Kamala Harris for the Biden administration’s use of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and mass parole, saying it does not legitimize migrants’ status.

The Biden administration recently extended TPS for Haitian migrants until February 2026. Vance also repeated false claims about Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, despite being informed they were untrue, sparking harassment in the community. In his North Carolina speech, Vance further attacked the administration’s immigration policy, alleging it increases housing costs, burdens hospitals, and overwhelms schools. He deflected concerns about the economic effects of mass deportations on sectors reliant on migrant labor, particularly agriculture.
