Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) said Wednesday the Salvadoran government refused his request to meet with Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Maryland resident wrongfully deported under the Trump administration. Van Hollen, who traveled to El Salvador, said officials there acknowledged they have no evidence linking Abrego Garcia to MS-13 but said his detention at the notorious CECOT prison would continue.

Van Hollen said Salvadoran Vice President Félix Ulloa claimed the U.S. is paying El Salvador to detain Abrego Garcia and declined to allow a visit or even a phone call. Van Hollen also accused the Trump administration of violating a Supreme Court order requiring it to facilitate Abrego Garcia’s return and called claims that he is a gang member “lies.”

Abrego Garcia’s 2019 deportation order was blocked by an immigration judge due to threats of gang violence. Van Hollen pledged to continue pushing for his release.
