The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is planning an “aggressive” reorganization that would eliminate 80,000 jobs, aiming to return to 2019 staffing levels, according to an internal memo obtained by the Associated Press.
VA Chief of Staff Christopher Syrek instructed top officials to prepare for agency-wide restructuring in August, aligning with the Trump administration’s goal of reducing federal employees. The cuts follow VA expansion efforts under the 2022 PACT Act, which provided care for veterans affected by burn pits.
More than 25% of VA employees are veterans, and the planned reductions have already sparked opposition from veterans’ groups. Democrats in Congress have condemned the move, with Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) calling it an “all-out assault” on veterans’ services. He accused the administration of “balancing the budget on the backs of those who served.”
Republicans have largely remained cautious, monitoring the administration’s restructuring efforts.
