USAID employees were notified Tuesday that they would have 15 minutes to retrieve personal belongings from their offices as the Trump administration moves forward with mass layoffs at the agency. Staff members, many of whom have had their email access revoked, received the notification by text—the only content currently visible on USAID’s website.
The administration announced on Sunday that 1,600 employees would be fired and nearly all remaining 4,200 employees placed on administrative leave as part of a broader effort to gut the agency. The message instructed employees to bring their own boxes and bags and stated that security screenings would be conducted before they were escorted to their workspaces.
A federal judge recently denied an attempt to block the administration’s downsizing of USAID, which previously had 14,000 employees before these reductions. The freeze on USAID funding has disrupted global food aid, migration control efforts, and initiatives to counter Chinese influence abroad.
