Undocumented crossings at the US southern border have reached a three-year low, marking the lowest point during Joe Biden’s presidency, following a controversial executive order in June. The latest federal Customs and Border Patrol data, obtained by CBS News, shows approximately 84,000 people crossed into the US without documentation in June, the lowest monthly total since Biden took office in January 2021.
This reduction is part of a broader trend of declining unauthorized entries since February, when 141,000 were apprehended. Biden’s executive order limits asylum seekers from crossing the southern border once a daily limit is exceeded. “To protect America as a land that welcomes immigrants, we must first secure the border and secure it now,” Biden stated upon signing the order.
The mandate has faced condemnation from Democrats, particularly progressives and immigration advocates, who view it as punitive. Vanessa Cárdenas, executive director of America’s Voice, said, “It violates fundamental American values and puts people in danger.” Despite the order, Biden’s handling of immigration remains unpopular among voters, as reflected in a recent Monmouth University poll. Republicans, including Trump, continue to criticize Biden for failing to address the high number of migrants arriving at the border.
