Ukraine’s primary military intelligence agency has accused Russian forces of utilizing Starlink satellite terminals, provided by Elon Musk’s SpaceX, within the occupied territories of eastern Ukraine. Despite Starlink’s insistence that its services have not been marketed or operational in Russia following the delivery of terminals to Ukraine post-February 2022 invasion for battlefield communication, Kyiv’s Main Directorate of Intelligence (GUR) reports evidence of usage by Russian troops in Donetsk.
Elon Musk, on the social media platform X, which he owns, refuted claims of selling Starlink terminals to Russia, stating, “To the best of our knowledge, no Starlinks have been sold directly or indirectly to Russia.” However, GUR spokesperson Andriy Yusov highlighted systematic use of these devices by Russian occupiers, with intercepted radio conversations revealing Starlink terminals installed in units of Russia’s 83rd Assault Brigade near Klischiivka and Andriivka.
The Kremlin responded by stating Starlink is neither certified in Russia nor officially supplied to its forces, hence denying any usage. Starlink further clarified on X that it does not conduct business with the Russian government or military and that its service does not operate in Russia, warning against potential scams claiming otherwise.
