Americans’ confidence in the judicial system fell to a record low of 35% in 2024, according to a new Gallup poll. This marks a steep 24-point drop over the last four years, setting the U.S. apart from other wealthy nations where public trust in courts remains higher.

The decline spans across political divides. Confidence dropped 17 points among those disapproving of President Biden’s leadership, likely influenced by court cases against Donald Trump. Supporters of Biden also reported an 18-point drop, which may reflect dissatisfaction with rulings favoring Trump.

Trump faced four indictments this year, but only a New York hush-money case led to a trial and conviction. Special counsel Jack Smith withdrew two federal cases, while Georgia’s election case remains on hold.

Gallup also noted sharp partisan divides: Republicans’ confidence in the Supreme Court rose to 71% in 2024, while Democrats’ trust fell to 24%, largely tied to rulings overturning abortion protections and affirming presidential immunity from prosecution.

Overall, confidence in U.S. courts has fallen faster than other institutions, such as the federal government, which dropped 20 points to 26%. The decline rivals steep trust drops in countries like Myanmar, Venezuela, and Syria amid political crises.
