U.S. intelligence agencies reported that Russian actors created and spread a fabricated video showing Trump mail-in ballots being destroyed in Pennsylvania, an incident intended to undermine public trust in U.S. elections. The Director of National Intelligence, FBI, and Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) stated the video falsely depicts a Black individual discarding Trump-marked ballots.
Bucks County election officials quickly debunked the video, confirming the materials were fake and condemning it as an attempt to “sow division and distrust.” The county reported the incident to authorities, including the FBI and Pennsylvania’s attorney general. This tactic aligns with Moscow’s pattern of using disinformation to create doubts about U.S. election integrity, according to officials.
Election experts warn that manipulated videos could become more prevalent with advancements in artificial intelligence. Joshua Graham Lynn, CEO of the nonpartisan group RepresentUs, emphasized the challenge of controlling misinformation on social media platforms once it spreads.
