Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced Friday that the U.S. will impose visa restrictions on more than 250 officials from Nicaragua’s government, citing widespread human rights abuses by President Daniel Ortega and Vice President Rosario Murillo.

“With this new set of restrictions, the U.S. government has now taken steps to impose visa restrictions on over 2,000 officials in Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo’s regime,” Rubio said in a statement. He condemned the couple’s “continued assault” on Nicaraguans’ freedoms and praised anti-government protestors as symbols of courage.

The sanctions follow Nicaragua’s recent constitutional reform allowing Ortega and Murillo to serve as co-presidents. International watchdogs, including the United Nations, say the regime has suppressed opposition, jailed dissidents, and forced thousands into exile since 2018.

Rubio called the government a “threat to U.S. security,” alleging it has “weaponized immigration” and become a hub for illegal border crossings. The Biden administration also imposed sanctions on Nicaraguan officials last year.
