WASHINGTON, D.C. — Two-thirds of self-identified MAGA voters said they would support a Republican congressional candidate accused of sexual assault rather than vote for the Democrat, according to a new Politico poll highlighting the extraordinary strength of partisan loyalty.
The survey presented respondents with a hypothetical race in which a former partner accused the Republican candidate of sexual assault. Among MAGA-aligned Trump voters, 66% chose the Republican, 25% said they would support neither candidate and 9% selected the Democrat.
Support dropped substantially among the broader Republican-leaning electorate. Forty-two percent backed the accused Republican candidate, 47% rejected both choices and 11% supported the Democrat.
The finding does not establish that voters believe sexual assault is acceptable or that an accusation proves guilt. However, it shows that most MAGA respondents were unwilling to cross party lines even when confronted with an allegation involving serious personal misconduct.
The results fit a broader pattern in Politico’s survey, which found MAGA voters more willing than other political groups to remain loyal to candidates facing scandals. By comparison, 40% of 2024 Kamala Harris voters said they would continue supporting a Democratic candidate accused of sexual assault.
Politico conducted the survey from July 13 through July 15 among 2,061 respondents. Its reported margin of error was 2.2 percentage points.
