President Donald Trump’s decision to pause U.S. military aid to Ukraine could leave the country more vulnerable to Russian aerial attacks and strain its ability to sustain the war effort, experts warn. The freeze, announced Monday, halts billions in U.S. assistance, including Patriot interceptors, long-range strike weapons, and intelligence-sharing.

Military analysts predict the impact will be felt within weeks, with Ukraine at risk of running out of critical air defense interceptors. Without replacements, Russia could intensify airstrikes on Ukrainian infrastructure and battlefield positions. Retired Rear Adm. Mark Montgomery stated, “Without these weapons, more Russian stuff hits, more infrastructure is damaged.”

Trump’s move follows a heated Oval Office meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, where tensions over a rare earth minerals deal and peace talks with Russia erupted. Some Trump allies have called for Zelensky’s resignation, while Senate Republicans defend the freeze as a negotiation tactic.

Zelensky, seeking to ease tensions, stated Ukraine is “ready to come to the negotiating table” and work under Trump’s leadership for a lasting peace. However, European leaders are now scrambling to fill the gap in military support as uncertainty looms over U.S. commitments.
