A New York judge has refused to dismiss the criminal charges against former President Donald Trump, ensuring his trial will commence next month. Judge Juan Merchan, in a Manhattan courtroom, rejected Trump’s legal team’s attempts to halt the proceedings, marking a significant step in one of several legal battles Trump faces. The trial, set for March 25th, will address 34 felony charges against Trump, linked to accusations of falsifying business records to conceal hush money payments to adult film star Stormy Daniels during the 2016 presidential election. This case, brought nearly a year ago by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, represents the first instance of a former president being indicted.

Trump’s attorney, Todd Blanche, argued that proceeding with the trial would be unjust and constitute “election interference,” given Trump’s involvement in other legal cases and the upcoming presidential primaries. However, Prosecutor Matthew Colangelo highlighted inconsistencies in Blanche’s stance, accusing Trump’s defense of trying to evade accountability. The trial date had been in question due to scheduling conflicts with another of Trump’s trials in Washington, D.C., but Judge Merchan has decided to move forward without delay.

This New York trial is one of four criminal cases Trump is currently facing, with the former president maintaining his innocence and decrying the charges as a politically motivated “witch hunt.” The outcome of this trial could have significant implications for Trump’s legal and political future.
