Aaron Szabo, President Donald Trump’s pick to lead the EPA’s Air and Radiation office, stated during his confirmation hearing Wednesday that the U.S. should focus on adapting to climate change rather than mitigating its causes.

During questioning from Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.), Szabo declined to say whether the U.S. should work to reduce carbon emissions, instead emphasizing adaptation strategies. “I believe that we need to be adapting to all changes, including those to the climate,” Szabo said.

His comments come as EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin is reportedly considering overturning the agency’s endangerment finding, which declares climate change a threat to public health. Szabo also declined to advocate for reducing fossil fuel dependence, saying the U.S. must balance adaptation with natural resource use.

Szabo’s past work lobbying for the chemical industry and involvement in Project 2025, a conservative policy blueprint, also drew scrutiny. However, the hearing remained largely procedural, with only 10 of 19 committee members attending.
