Washington, D.C. — President Donald Trump has withdrawn Canada’s invitation to participate in his newly announced “Peace Council,” a move that follows sharp rhetorical exchanges with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney during the World Economic Forum in Davos.

Trump announced the decision Thursday, publishing a letter he said was sent to Carney formally revoking Canada’s invitation. In the message, Trump described the council as “the most prestigious council of leaders ever assembled” but did not provide a specific justification for Canada’s removal. The announcement came days after Carney delivered a speech in Davos warning that the global order was experiencing a “rupture,” not a transition.

In his remarks, Carney cautioned that major powers were increasingly using economic integration and tariffs as tools of coercion, urging middle-sized countries to work together to counter pressure from larger economies. While Carney did not name the United States or Trump directly, the comments were widely interpreted as a critique of U.S. trade and foreign policy practices.

Trump responded the following day at the forum, criticizing Carney’s comments and asserting that Canada benefits heavily from its relationship with the United States. He said Canada should show greater appreciation, arguing that U.S. power has played a central role in Canada’s security and economic stability.

According to Trump, the Peace Council will initially focus on the war in Gaza before expanding to address broader international conflicts. Canada’s exclusion highlights ongoing strains in U.S.–Canada relations, particularly over trade, global influence, and economic policy.
