President Donald Trump issued a warning on Thursday regarding potential consequences for Hamas if internal conflicts in Gaza persist, stating, “We will have no choice but to go in and kill them.” This statement represented a change in tone from Trump’s earlier comments, where he had minimized reports of clashes following a ceasefire and hostage agreement between Israel and Hamas.
Later, in remarks to reporters, Trump clarified that U.S. troops would not be entering Gaza. “It’s not going to be us,” he noted. “There are people very close, very nearby that will go in, and they’ll do the trick very easily, but under our auspices.” While he did not specify which groups he was referencing, it seemed to imply the involvement of Israel.
Trump’s ceasefire plan included a requirement for Hamas to return hostages or provide information about deceased captives by Monday, although some deadlines have already passed. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has accused Hamas of delaying the return of hostages’ remains.
U.S. officials confirmed that 200 American troops are currently stationed in Israel to assist in monitoring the ceasefire but reiterated that they will not be entering Gaza. Trump’s comments come in light of reports of clashes between Hamas factions and rival armed groups over the distribution of aid, which is exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
