WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Donald Trump warned House Republicans on Tuesday that losing control of Congress in the 2026 midterm elections could expose him to a third impeachment, urging lawmakers to aggressively campaign on his policy agenda to maintain their majority.
Speaking at the House Republicans’ annual issues retreat at the Kennedy Center, which Trump jokingly referred to as the “Trump Kennedy Center,” the president said Democrats would seek impeachment if they regain control of the House. Trump told lawmakers the midterms represent a “road map to victory” if Republicans focus on border security, tax cuts, and opposition to transgender athletes competing in women’s sports.
“If we don’t win the midterms, it’s just going to be — they’ll find a reason to impeach me,” Trump said, arguing his previous impeachments were politically motivated. House Democrats impeached Trump twice during his first term, once over his dealings with Ukraine and again for allegedly inciting the Jan. 6, 2021 Capitol riot. The Senate acquitted him both times.
Trump’s remarks came as Democrats marked the fifth anniversary of the Capitol attack with an informal House hearing. Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said Democrats would not allow the events of Jan. 6 to be minimized or rewritten.
Despite Trump’s confidence, recent national polling shows his approval rating at roughly 36 percent, highlighting potential challenges for Republicans heading into the midterms. GOP leaders also face immediate hurdles, including avoiding a government shutdown and convincing voters their legislative accomplishments warrant continued control of Congress.
