President Trump signaled Monday that continued U.S. military aid to Ukraine could be tied to a deal securing access to the country’s rare earth elements and other critical minerals.
“We’re handing them money hand over fist. We’re giving them equipment,” Trump said, adding, “We’re looking to do a deal with Ukraine, where they’re going to secure what we’re giving them with their rare earth and other things.”
Ukraine’s “Victory Plan” already proposes supplying strategic partners with resources such as uranium, titanium, lithium, and graphite. It remains unclear if Trump’s proposed deal would extend beyond rare earth elements to these minerals.
Trump may also seek similar deals elsewhere. His incoming national security adviser, Mike Waltz, has previously linked Trump’s interest in Greenland to its mineral wealth.
