Biden and Trump share common ground on a few issues. Both support a ban on bump stocks, devices that increase a gun’s firing speed, and red flag laws, which temporarily confiscate firearms from individuals deemed a threat.
However, their stances diverge significantly beyond these points. Trump has pledged to block new gun laws if elected, promising, “no one will lay a finger on your firearms.” Conversely, Biden advocates for new restrictions, including banning assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, and supports expanded background checks.
Addressing gun violence extends beyond gun restrictions. Trump has proposed sending the National Guard to cities grappling with gun violence and suggested tying federal grants to police departments to his reform ideas. On the other hand, Biden emphasizes that gun violence in the U.S. is decreasing, with recent data showing a 13% decline in homicides last year. His Justice Department has invested millions in crime prevention task forces, including new ones aimed at preventing carjacking.
