WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Donald Trump said he plans to “be involved” in Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s corruption trial “to help him out a little bit,” during an interview aired Sunday on CBS60 Minutes. The comment marks another instance of Trump wading into Israel’s internal legal proceedings as Netanyahu faces ongoing charges of bribery, fraud, and breach of trust.

“I don’t think they treat him very well,” Trump said of Netanyahu. “He’s under trial for some things, and I don’t think they treat him very well. We’ll be involved in that to help him out a little bit, because I think it’s very unfair.”

The interview was taped Friday and follows Trump’s previous calls for Israel’s president to pardon Netanyahu. During a recent address to Israel’s parliament, Trump dismissed the charges, saying, “Cigars and champagne, who the hell cares about this?”

Netanyahu is accused of accepting over $200,000 in gifts and granting regulatory favors in exchange for favorable media coverage. His trial, now in its fourth year, has been delayed repeatedly.

Trump also claimed the Gaza ceasefire remains “solid” and confirmed the return of several Israeli hostages’ remains.
