THURMONT, Maryland — President Donald Trump transformed a televised Cabinet meeting at Camp David into a wide-ranging attack on political opponents, departing from the presidential retreat’s traditional role as a setting for private diplomacy.
During Friday’s session, Trump blamed Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and other Democratic officials for cyberattacks affecting more than 30 water systems, calling state leaders “grossly incompetent.” He offered no evidence and rejected indications that Iranian-linked hackers may have been responsible. Federal authorities have not made a final attribution, although security agencies previously warned that Iranian hackers were targeting American water infrastructure.
Trump also lamented the collapse of a proposed $1.8 billion fund intended to compensate allies who claimed they were unfairly targeted by federal investigations. He defended people involved in the Jan. 6 Capitol attack and appeared to retreat from an earlier pledge to license Patriot missile production for Ukraine.
The president additionally described migration from Morocco into Spain as an “invasion” and connected immigration policy to Republican prospects in the November midterms.
The White House promoted the gathering as the first televised Cabinet meeting from Camp David. Rather than focusing narrowly on agency business, Trump used the historic retreat to repeat campaign themes, criticize Democrats and warn that Republican losses could threaten his agenda.
