Former President Donald Trump won the Iowa caucuses on Monday, securing 51% of the vote, a historic figure exceeding the previous GOP record in Iowa. This victory reinforces his status as the frontrunner for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination. The Associated Press called the win for Trump just 30 minutes after the caucuses began, amidst snowy, subzero conditions.
The battle for the position of primary Trump alternative resulted in a split decision between Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley. DeSantis narrowly edged out Haley for second place, each securing approximately 21% and 19% of the vote, respectively. This outcome suggests that the GOP’s anti-Trump faction remains divided.
Trump’s impressive showing in Iowa surpassed his own target of 50% support and eclipsed Bob Dole’s 1988 record. Despite lesser campaign spending, Trump’s victory was significant, marking a successful start to his campaign.
DeSantis’s second-place finish, albeit narrow, was crucial for his campaign’s momentum, particularly ahead of the New Hampshire primary. Haley, who surged in Iowa’s final surveys, remains a strong contender, particularly in New Hampshire and her home state of South Carolina.
