President-elect Donald Trump plans to nominate Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) as Secretary of State, according to reports and a source cited by The Hill. The nomination marks a significant shift from 2016, when Trump and Rubio were rivals in the GOP presidential primary. Earlier this year, Trump considered Rubio as a potential running mate before selecting Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio).
Rubio, known for his strong foreign policy stances on China and Iran, received praise from lawmakers like Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.), who highlighted Rubio’s commitment to U.S. leadership, especially in Latin America. In a recent interview, Rubio suggested that the Russia-Ukraine war would likely end with a negotiated settlement.
Trump’s “America First” foreign policy approach will continue to prioritize reduced U.S. involvement in Ukraine and increased responsibility from NATO allies. Rubio joins Trump’s swiftly forming national security team, which includes Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) as U.N. Ambassador and Rep. Mike Waltz (R-Fla.) as National Security Adviser.
Rubio’s expected confirmation will narrow the GOP’s Senate majority, currently projected at 52 seats. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) will appoint a replacement for Rubio until the next election.
