President Donald Trump said he will announce 25% tariffs on all steel and aluminum imports Monday, applying to all countries, including Canada and Mexico. Speaking aboard Air Force One, Trump questioned why the U.S. should “protect another country” like Canada, suggesting tariffs could harm its auto industry.
The U.S. first imposed 25% tariffs on steel and 10% on aluminum in 2018 under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act, though some countries later negotiated exemptions.
Trump also plans to introduce reciprocal tariffs matching those imposed by other countries, with details expected Tuesday or Wednesday. “If they are charging us 130 percent and we’re charging them nothing. It’s not going to stay that way,” he said.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford criticized the move, warning of “shifting goalposts and constant chaos” that could harm the economy.
