President Donald Trump threatened Sunday to block the Washington Commanders’ new stadium project unless the NFL team reverts to its former name, the Redskins. He also urged MLB’s Cleveland Guardians to bring back the Indians moniker.

“The Washington ‘Whatever’s’ should IMMEDIATELY change their name back,” Trump posted on Truth Social, adding that “our great Indian people, in massive numbers, want this to happen,” though he provided no evidence.

Trump said he “may put a restriction” on the Commanders if they refuse, noting he would block stadium development in D.C. The White House holds sway over federal commissions that influence stadium plans.

The teams originally changed their names in response to racial justice activism following the 2020 murder of George Floyd. Native American advocate Suzan Shown Harjo praised the name changes, while Guardians president Chris Antonetti reaffirmed the team’s excitement for the future under its current name.
