With the war in Ukraine intensifying, Donald Trump is taking a new approach to pressure Russia. The former president has given Moscow a 10-day deadline to agree to a peace deal or face sweeping secondary tariffs on countries that continue buying Russian oil and gas. The tariffs are set to begin at 100%.
“We’re gonna put on tariffs and stuff… it may or may not affect them, but it could,” Trump said aboard Air Force One.
The strategy, announced after a meeting with U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer, has drawn reactions from both allies and adversaries. Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev warned Trump not to escalate, stating it’s a “step towards war.”
Senators Richard Blumenthal and Lindsey Graham, co-sponsors of related tariff legislation, endorsed the move. Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Zelensky called for tougher sanctions following deadly Russian strikes across Ukraine that killed at least two dozen civilians.
Trump plans to act through executive authority rather than wait for congressional approval. However, targeting countries like China and India—key trade partners and Russian energy buyers—carries diplomatic risk.
