Donald Trump’s transition team agreed Tuesday to let the Justice Department conduct background checks on nominees and appointees, enabling them to secure necessary security clearances ahead of Inauguration Day. This ensures aides can access classified information and nominees can complete Senate confirmation processes.
The move follows delays in signing agreements with the Biden White House for transition coordination, which experts and officials emphasized as critical for a smooth transfer of power. Security clearances are vital for accessing classified information, including national security threats.
Republican Senators have pushed for FBI checks on Trump’s nominees, including defense secretary nominee Pete Hegseth and intelligence director nominee Rep. Tulsi Gabbard. Sen. Susan Collins stressed the importance of thorough reviews before confirmation votes.
“This agreement ensures Trump’s team is ready on Day 1,” said Susie Wiles, Trump’s White House chief of staff designate.
