The White House has begun an internal review of several Smithsonian Institution museums to “celebrate American exceptionalism” and remove what it calls “divisive or ideologically driven language.” The move follows President Trump’s March executive order directing Vice President JD Vance to review the institution’s exhibits.

In a letter to Smithsonian Secretary Lonnie Bunch, Office of Management and Budget Director Russell Vought said the review will start with eight museums, including the National Museum of African American History and Culture, the Air and Space Museum, and the National Portrait Gallery. Museums are asked to submit materials within 30 days and make “content corrections” within 120 days.

The Smithsonian said it remains committed to “scholarly excellence” and accurate history. Democrats condemned the order as politically motivated, warning it could undermine the institution’s independence.

The Washington Post recently reported the National Museum of American History removed a placard on Trump’s impeachments, later replaced with a broader display. Earlier this year, Trump criticized the Portrait Gallery’s director, who later resigned. The review is part of a broader push by the administration to reshape U.S. cultural institutions.
