President Donald Trump said Sunday he is “not joking” about potentially seeking a third term in office, directly challenging the 22nd Amendment, which limits U.S. presidents to two elected terms.

“There are methods which you could do it,” Trump told NBC News in a phone interview, though he declined to elaborate. When asked if Vice President JD Vance could run and “pass the baton,” Trump replied, “Well, that’s one… But there are others too.”

The 22nd Amendment, ratified in 1951 following Franklin D. Roosevelt’s four elections, explicitly bars any person from being elected president more than twice. Trump, who would be 82 at the end of a second term, said it’s “far too early to think about it,” but cited his “popularity” as a reason Americans might support extending his presidency.

Despite claiming to hold “the highest poll numbers of any Republican for the last 100 years,” Trump has peaked at 47% in Gallup polling, far below the highs reached by both Presidents George W. Bush and George H.W. Bush.

The Constitution doesn’t seem to be a barrier to anything that Trump wants to do. I hope Congress and the courts can persuade him otherwise, if not, there could be rebellion.
