Washington, D.C. — President Donald Trump on Friday directed Attorney General Pam Bondi, the Department of Justice and the FBI to investigate Jeffrey Epstein’s connections to several high-profile Democrats and major financial institutions. The move follows a week of renewed attention after the House Oversight Committee released emails from Epstein’s estate, including messages that referenced Trump and his past interactions with the convicted sex offender.
Trump said he wants investigators to examine Epstein’s ties to former President Bill Clinton, Larry Summers, Reid Hoffman and JPMorgan Chase, framing the call for an inquiry as a response to what he labeled the “Epstein Hoax.” He argued Democrats are using the issue politically following the end of the federal shutdown on Wednesday.
According to released records, Trump flew on Epstein’s private jet multiple times in the 1990s, and emails contained allegations claiming he “knew about the girls” and spent time at Epstein’s residence with Virginia Giuffre. Democrats released the emails earlier this week, saying the documents contradict Trump’s public statements.
Those named by Trump — including Clinton, Summers and Hoffman — did not respond to requests for comment. JPMorgan Chase, which settled a 2023 lawsuit for $75 million over its past financial relationship with Epstein, reiterated that it ended its association years before Epstein’s arrest.
A Reuters/Ipsos poll released this week found strong overall Republican support for Trump, though only about four in 10 approved of his handling of the Epstein matter.
