Davos, Switzerland — President Donald Trump said Wednesday that the United States will not use military force to take control of Greenland, even as he reiterated his desire to acquire the Arctic territory during a lengthy and combative speech at the World Economic Forum.

Speaking for more than an hour in Davos, Trump called for “immediate negotiations” with Denmark over Greenland and argued the U.S. is uniquely positioned to protect and develop the region. While warning that American power would be “unstoppable” if force were used, Trump said plainly that he would not pursue a military option, signaling an attempt to tamp down fears among European allies.

Trump framed the issue as one of global security and economic leadership, asserting that Denmark lacks the capacity to manage Greenland and that U.S. involvement would benefit both Americans and Greenlanders. He also suggested there would be consequences for Denmark if it refused to negotiate, saying the U.S. would “remember” a rejection.

The Greenland comments came amid broader criticism of Europe and NATO. Trump accused European countries of relying on U.S. support while pursuing policies he said were undermining their societies, particularly on immigration. He again claimed the United States was experiencing an unprecedented economic turnaround and declared inflation “defeated,” a claim disputed by many economists and consumers.

Trump also used the speech to attack climate policies, praise oil production, and mock several foreign leaders. His remarks landed as transatlantic tensions remain high and markets reacted nervously to renewed tariff threats tied to the Greenland dispute.
